Keep your garden in shape by cutting back roses, climbing plants and other summer interest plants encouraging long term flowering and good shape. Always make sure you use tools with a sharp blade to get a clean cut and lessen the chance of disease setting in. Prune smart When pruning large branches, start with the undercut first. Do this by cutting underneath the branch so the weight of the branch will pull it down and it won't strip off any bark . On shrubs – tackle the dead, diseased and damaged first. Always use quality tools.

As winter approaches, all the plants in your garden will become dormant. Prepare to protect tender plants from frost, either with a fleece or in a cold frame. In the greenhouse use a heater or line the wall and/or roof with an insulating bubble wrap. Protect from frost Mulch and cover borders with bark chips. Not only does it look neat and tidy but it protects against frost and will lock in moisture. If you use weed control fabric underneath the chips, this will stop weeds growing through and save you time in the future.
